The administration has seized 96 sacks of government rice stockpiled at the house of a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader in Subarnachar upazila, Noakhali. The raid was conducted on Saturday afternoon, May 16, based on information from locals.

The seized rice was recovered from the house of Abdus Samad, also known as Samad Doctor, who serves as the Ameer of Ward No. 9 under Char Jabbar Union in Subarnachar upazila .

Locals said government rice had been stored at Samad Doctor's house near Imam Ali Bazar for a long time. It is alleged that he used to sell the rice at higher prices. On Saturday morning, locals went to his house and saw approximately 96 sacks of rice stored in government sacks in a room.

Tension spread in the area following the news. Police arrived at the scene in the afternoon after the upazila administration and Char Jabbar Police Station were informed.

Abdus Samad claimed that the rice belonged to his younger brother Kamal, a dealer of a daily shop, who had purchased it from various madrasas and the Ramgati area of Lakshmipur.

Subarnachar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Akib Osman said the quantity of recovered government rice is approximately 3 tonnes.

The rice has been kept in administrative custody. If the accused can produce valid documents, the rice will be returned. Otherwise, legal action will be taken following an investigation.
