A citizen can leave the country at any time, can also return: Rumeen Farhana

Brahmanbaria-2 constituency MP Rumeen Farhana has said regarding the context of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country that any citizen of Bangladesh can leave the country at any time and can also return to the country at any time. What the government will do after returning to the country is the government’s matter.

She said this while responding to journalists’ questions after the reception programme of meritorious students at Ashuganj Upazila Parishad auditorium of Brahmanbaria around 5:15pm on Friday (September 18). Abdul Kadir Shah Pathagar of Ashuganj organised the programme.

Rumeen Farhana said, “It has been clearly stated in the constitution of Bangladesh that any citizen can leave the country at any time and can also enter the country at any time. This has been clearly given in the constitution. What steps the government will take after entering Bangladesh is in the hands of the government.”

Earlier Rumeen Farhana had also spoken on the matter of Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country on July 6. That day she had said there is no legal barrier for Sheikh Hasina to return to the country and the prevailing legal process will have to be followed if she returns to the country. That statement was also published in multiple media outlets.

Meanwhile on Friday itself Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat gave a statement on Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country at a programme in Nabinnagar of Brahmanbaria. He said if Sheikh Hasina returns to the country she will be confronted with the legal process. In the report of the same day the words of receiving her by putting handcuffs through the law if she returns to the country have also come as his statement.

Journalists also asked Rumeen Farhana about the recent protest of the local leaders and activists of BNP in Ashuganj. Reports have been published in the media that Ashuganj upazila BNP staged a broom procession in protest against her statement given in the Jatiya Sangsad criticising the BNP government and warned of declaring her unwanted in Ashuganj if the statement is not withdrawn.

On this matter Rumeen Farhana said there will be differences of opinion in politics and incidents like processions-meetings or declaring someone unwanted can happen over that. She mentioned these as part of the political process.
