Eleven officials and employees, including three teachers of Begum Rokeya University (BRU), have been permanently expelled over the murder of the university's student Abu Sayeed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The list of those expelled was published on Thursday, October 1. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Shawkat Ali confirmed the matter.

University sources said the decision was taken at a Syndicate meeting that lasted about four hours until 8pm on Wednesday.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Shawkat Ali said the decision to permanently expel them was taken at the 123rd meeting of the Syndicate, the university's highest policy-making forum.

The three teachers permanently expelled are former Associate Professor of Mathematics Mashiur Rahman, Associate Professor of Public Administration Asaduzzaman Mandal, also known as Asad, and Associate Professor of Political Science and former Proctor Shariful Islam.

The expelled officials and employees are Assistant Registrar Rafiul Hasan Russel, Assistant Registrar Hafizur Rahman, Office Assistant cum Computer Operator Mahabubar Rahman, also known as Babu, Section Officer Moniruzzaman Palash, MLSS Mohammad Nurunnabi Mandal, security worker Nur Alam Mia, MLSS AKM Amir Hossain and contractual employee of the Proctor's Office Anwar Parvez Apel.

Earlier, International Crimes Tribunal-2 handed down various terms of rigorous and simple imprisonment to those accused in the Abu Sayeed murder case. On April 9, a three-member judicial panel led by Tribunal Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury announced the verdict.

The Vice-Chancellor said the decision against the university's teachers and officials and employees was taken at the Syndicate meeting after the full copy of the verdict was received.

He further said that during the quota reform movement in 2024, Abu Sayeed, a student of the English Department of Begum Rokeya University, was killed in police firing in Rangpur on July 16. His death sparked widespread discussion across the country. The quota reform movement later turned into an anti-government mass uprising.
