The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an investigation against more than 50 individuals and organizations over large-scale white stone looting and corruption in Sylhet’s Bholaganj.

ACC Director General Md. Akhter Hossain confirmed the move on Wednesday (September 3), saying the decision followed preliminary findings of illegal activities.

“Legal action will be taken based on the gravity of the crime and its relevance after the investigation,” he told reporters.

An inquiry by the ACC’s Sylhet office identified names of local leaders from BNP, Awami League, Jamaat, and NCP, along with influential stone traders and administrative officials.

The initial report also cited negligence by law enforcement authorities, including the Divisional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, UNO, Police Superintendent, and the OC of Companiganj Police Station.

According to ACC sources, stones worth several hundred crore taka have been illegally extracted from the protected Bholaganj border area over the past year.

A formal probe committee will soon be formed to carry out the investigation.
