In a heartbreaking incident in Raipur Upazila of Lakshmipur, a mother and her three daughters have been hacked to death. Following the incident, an infuriated mob beat the accused youth to death. The district police and health department confirmed the deaths of the four individuals on Thursday afternoon (June 25).

The deceased have been identified as Shahinur Begum, 38, her eldest daughter Saima Akter, 21, second daughter Ikra Akter, 17, and youngest daughter Shifa Akter, 9. Saima was a student at Dhaka University. The accused, Antar Majumder, 30, was a resident of Subarnachar Upazila in Noakhali and was known in Raipur as a mobile fruit vendor.

According to police and local sources, Shahinur Begum's family had been living in a rented house in Raipur for the past 12 to 14 years. After her husband, Md. Kamal, died of electrocution in 2019, she had been struggling to run the household with her three daughters and one son.

On Thursday morning, the accused Antar Majumder entered the house and attacked Shahinur Begum and her three daughters with a sharp weapon. When they were rescued in critical condition and taken to the Raipur Upazila Health Complex, doctors declared Shahinur, Saima, and Shifa dead. Later, Ikra also passed away while being rushed to Dhaka in critical condition.

Following the incident, the local public caught Antar Majumder and gave him a mass beating. He was taken to the Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

District Superintendent of Police Md. Abu Tariq stated that Antar Majumder previously lived in the same area with his wife in a rented house and left about seven to eight months ago. Initially, it is suspected that he went to the spot based on a prior acquaintance. However, the actual motive behind the murders is yet to be confirmed.

According to police information, a neighbor saw Antar suspiciously at the house during the incident and informed the locals. As a result, the matter quickly came to light.

Meanwhile, tension spread across the area as news of the murders broke. While attempting to bring the situation under control, at least 6 to 7 members of the police were injured by bricks thrown by the angry mob.

Raipur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Baharul Alam said that a total of five people were brought to the hospital. Among them, four died. The accused, Antar Majumder, also died later while undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, grief and panic have spread throughout the area. The police have launched an investigation to uncover the motive behind the murders and are interrogating those concerned.
