Accused in Jubo League leader murder case killed in mob lynching
Abdul Latif Bhuiyan, 45, an accused in the Jubo League leader murder case in Titas upazila of Cumilla, was killed in a mob lynching and hacking. The incident took place in Manikkandi village of the upazila around 9:30pm on Monday (May 11).
The deceased Abdul Latif Bhuiyan was an accused in the murder case of locally discussed Jubo League leader Zahirul Islam Molla.
According to police and local sources, he was first taken to the Titas Upazila Health Complex in a seriously injured condition. Later, when his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital under police guard. He died on the way to the hospital around 1:45am.
Titas Police Station OC Mohammad Monirul Haque confirmed the incident.
Police said that Latif Bhuiyan's body has been kept at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Morgue for autopsy. A foreign pistol and two bullets were recovered from him.
According to locals, Jubo League leader Jahirul Islam Molla of Manikkandi village was killed on December 6, 2022, over a political dispute over control of a fishing project. Latif Bhuiyan was the accused in that case.
After returning to the area after being released on bail recently, he allegedly opened fire on Jahirul's brother-in-law Jahangir Alam Molla on Monday night. He was later caught by locals while trying to escape.
At that time, an agitated mob beat and hacked him, seriously injuring him. On receiving information, the police went to the spot, rescued him and sent him to the hospital. He later died while undergoing treatment.
