Accused slits throat with blade at Dhaka court
A shocking incident took place at the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-3 in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon (July 16), when a defendant attempted suicide by slashing his own throat in the courtroom.
The accused, Badal Hossain Munna, 21, reportedly used a concealed blade to cut his throat during a bail hearing. The court was in session when Munna suddenly brought out the blade and inflicted the injury on himself.
Police personnel on duty responded immediately and rushed him to the National Medical College Hospital, located near the court premises.
Md Salahuddin, the emergency in-charge at the hospital, confirmed the severity of the injury. "His trachea has been cut. We've provided emergency treatment and transferred him to a government hospital for further care, as this is a police case," he said.
Munna has been in jail for several months in connection with a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. His family insists the charges are false.
Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Munna's father, Abdul Ali, said: "My son has been in custody for months. Today was his bail hearing. While standing in court, he suddenly took out a blade and injured himself in the throat. This case was filed by his father-in-law — it's false."
