Action will be taken against those who crossed the line: NBR Chairman
Md Abdur Rahman Khan, Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), said that strict action would be taken against those who crossed the line during the recent movement by NBR employees.
He made the comment while speaking to journalists at Dhaka Customs House on Monday (July 7) afternoon.
When asked what steps would be taken to restore trust, the NBR Chairman said, “That’s why I came to meet the officials today—to reassure them. If everyone behaves responsibly and performs their duties properly, I don’t think anyone needs to be afraid.”
He also said, “Some individuals have crossed serious boundaries. These matters will be handled differently. But in general, I don’t think there is any reason for anyone to be afraid.”
In response to whether the ongoing movement will affect revenue collection, he said, “This kind of situation won’t last. Those working in the revenue department will continue collecting revenue. Even during this difficult time, they have performed their duties. There is no reason to fear that revenue collection will stop or be severely disrupted. Everything will be fine.”
When asked whether the financial losses from the movement can be recovered, the NBR Chairman said, “This is a very sensitive issue. The incident was unexpected. We will all try together to recover the losses.”
Regarding the government issuing some orders after the June 30 call for a peaceful environment, he said, “Some matters fall under policy decisions of the government—you need to understand that.”
Earlier in the day, the NBR Chairman visited the Dhaka Customs House at the airport. During the visit, he inaugurated three new software systems: a-Challan, Baggage Rules, and Detention Memo.
