Actor Shams Sumon to be buried in Rajshahi

Popular actor Shams Sumon will be buried in Rajshahi. His younger brother Rashed Ibn Obaid Ripon confirmed this information on Wednesday.


Family sources said that his second namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Jhautala Jame Mosque premises in Rajshahi city after Zohr prayers on Thursday. He will then be buried at the Harem Khan Graveyard.


His wife and children will arrive in Dhaka from London and take the body to Rajshahi on Thursday morning. The body will be kept at their home at Jhautala Mithur intersection in the city from morning to noon, so that well-wishers can pay their last respects.


The actor breathed his last at a private hospital in the capital around 6:30pm on Tuesday. He was 61 years old. Earlier, his first namaz-e-janaza was held at the Channel I premises in Dhaka. Later, the body was kept in the mortuary of the Combined Military Hospital.


Born and raised in Rajshahi, Shams Sumon studied at Rajshahi Government Laboratory High School, Rajshahi College and Rajshahi University. He showed his talent in acting and recitation since his student days.


He was a well-known vocalist and recitator of Bangladesh Betar and one of the founding members of the Rajshahi Recitation Council. Later, he came to Dhaka and started his acting career through stage plays and became known as a popular face on the small screen.


He also acted in films and won the National Film Award for his performance in the film 'Swapno puron' in 2008. His death has brought mourning to the cultural arena.
