Deaths of 6 newborn
Ad-Din Hospital's post-operative ward has structural defects: DGHS
Investigators have found evidence of construction-related flaws in the post-operative ward of Ad-Din Hospital following the deaths of six newborns at the facility in the capital’s Moghbazar area.
Officials from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the investigation committee formed over the incident is expected to submit its final report on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters on Friday (May 29), Additional Director General Dr. Zahid Raihan said several structural irregularities had been identified in the hospital’s post-operative ward.
“We have found some construction-related flaws in the ward. The investigation report will determine whether those issues had any impact on the treatment environment for the newborns,” he said.
According to health officials, investigators closely examined the hospital’s oxygen supply system, ventilation, temperature control and overall ward management procedures as part of the inquiry. Members of the committee also interviewed doctors, nurses and other relevant hospital staff.
The deaths of six newborns receiving treatment at the hospital over the past few days sparked widespread concern and prompted separate investigations by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the health directorate.
Families of the deceased infants have also demanded a transparent investigation to determine the exact cause of the deaths.
Dr. Zahid Raihan said the report would not only identify any potential negligence or responsibility but would also include recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
The incident has reignited concerns over hospital management standards and neonatal care facilities in Bangladesh.
