Additional police deployed around MP Amir Hamza's residence

Additional police personnel have been deployed around the residence of Kushtia-3 (Sadar) Member of Parliament Amir Hamza in the Thanapara area following a violent clash between his supporters and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad. The confrontation, which resulted in the vandalism of the MP's vehicle and left him injured, saw at least 10 people sustained injuries from both sides.

The clash erupted around 5:30pm at Chhoy Rastar Mor in Kushtia city, located near the lawmaker's residence on Saturday (August 15).

According to local and party sources, the Kushtia district branch of Gono Odhikar Parishad had organized a protest rally at Chhoy Rastar Mor on Saturday afternoon to denounce recent remarks made by MP Amir Hamza concerning the president and general secretary of the party.

As the protest was concluding, MP Amir Hamza was returning home under police escort. When his motorcade passed the rally site, tensions flared between his supporters and the gathered Gono Odhikar Parishad activists. The verbal altercations quickly escalated into scuffles, chases, counter-chases, and brick-throwing.

During the melee, the MP's vehicle was attacked and vandalized. Local sources reported that at least 10 individuals were injured during the clashes—seven from Jamaat-e-Islami and three from Gono Odhikar Parishad—and were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment.

Toukir Ahmed, district organizational secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, claimed they were holding a peaceful program to protest derogatory remarks made by Amir Hamza against their organization, alleging that the MP's supporters launched a sudden assault on them.

Conversely, supporters of Amir Hamza maintained that Gono Odhikar Parishad activists initiated the attack.

MP Amir Hamza stated that he was returning from a program near Islamic University when he learned that abusive language was being directed at his parents. He said he contacted the officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, after which the police vehicle led the way with his car following behind.

"My vehicle was suddenly attacked with sticks and hockey sticks. My uncle, who was sitting in the front seat, had his leg cut, and I sustained an injury to my head," Amir Hamza said, holding district Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders Abdul Khalek and Toukir Ahmed responsible and announcing plans to file a formal case.

Following the incident, hundreds of supporters from both sides gathered near the MP's residence, creating a tense atmosphere in the area.

Kushtia Additional Superintendent of Police Faisal Mahmud stated that law enforcement attempted to separate the opposing factions and bring the situation under control. Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matbor Hossain added that additional security measures were promptly taken around the lawmaker's home to prevent further escalation, and the situation is now under police control while legal proceedings regarding the clash are underway.
