Nearly 60 tourism resorts in Lama Upazila have been temporarily closed as local authorities respond to the threat posed by ongoing adverse weather conditions linked to a low-pressure system.

The decision was announced following an emergency meeting of the Lama Upazila Disaster Preparedness Committee on Sunday. Lama Upazila Executive Officer Md. Moin Uddin said the resorts, many located on hilly slopes, face increased risk of natural disasters due to persistent heavy rainfall in recent days. “To ensure public safety, resorts across key tourist destinations, including Mirinja Valley, will remain closed until further notice. They will reopen once the weather stabilizes,” he added.

Bandarban Weather Office’s Officer-in-Charge, Sonatan Kumar Mondal, reported 87 millimeters of rainfall recorded over the last 24 hours until 3 pm Sunday, with rain intensifying later in the day. The continuous downpour has heightened fears of landslides in the region.

According to Executive Engineer Arup Chakraborty of the Bandarban Water Development Board, water levels in the Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Bakkhali rivers have risen but have yet to surpass danger thresholds.

In a bid to prepare for any eventuality, Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Shamim Ara Rini confirmed that 220 temporary shelters have been opened across seven upazilas. A Disaster Emergency Services Committee has been formed, involving fire services, police, health officials, volunteer organizations, and NGOs to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Residents in vulnerable foothill areas have been urged to evacuate to safe shelters through public announcements.
