‘Agrajatra Protidin’ Acting Editor Rezanur Islam granted bail in defamation case
A court in Bogura granted bail to Rezanur Islam, acting editor of the daily Agrajatra Protidin, in a case filed over allegations of spreading false information on social media targeting Local Government State Minister Mir Shah Alam.
Judge Mehedi Hasan of the Sadar Amoli branch of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court passed the order on Sunday (June 21).
The development was confirmed by defence lawyer Tanzim Al Misbah.
According to case documents, Rezanur Islam was arrested late Thursday from the Board Bazar area of Gazipur’s Gacha police station by Bogura district Detective Branch (DB) police. He was later produced before the court on Friday and sent to jail.
The case, filed on June 17 at Bogura Sadar Police Station by Bogura Press Club Treasurer Tanvir Alam Rimon, also names several others, including the publisher and editor of Agrajatra Protidin, Mehdi Hasan, news editor Ashraf Ali Faruqi, reporter Saleh Kaisar, Bogura correspondent Mohammad Shams, and district correspondent Sabbir Hasan.
The complaint alleges that a press conference held at Bogura Press Club on June 12 was misrepresented and that provocative and defamatory remarks were circulated on social media ahead of the Prime Minister’s district visit on June 13.
It further claims that the dissemination of unverified and intentional misinformation damaged the political and social reputation of the individuals concerned.
Lawyer Tanzim Al Misbah said the case stemmed from a misunderstanding, adding that discussions are ongoing between both parties and a possible settlement through mutual agreement is under consideration.
Authorities confirmed that the case has been recorded under multiple sections of the Cyber Security Act 2026, with the DB assigned to investigate the matter.
