AI cameras to be installed to 50 more traffic signals across Dhaka

Dhaka is expanding its technology-driven traffic management system, with AI-powered cameras set to be installed at 50 more key intersections across the capital to improve traffic flow and strengthen enforcement.

The new system will cover 28 intersections under Dhaka North City Corporation and 22 under Dhaka South City Corporation. Authorities plan to introduce modern traffic signals capable of responding to changing traffic conditions and managing vehicle movement more efficiently.

The expansion follows a pilot project launched at 13 major intersections in Dhaka around the middle of last year, where semi-automated traffic signals were introduced on a trial basis.

Authorities say the experience from the pilot has encouraged them to expand the technology to more locations.

The AI-enabled system will analyse traffic volumes and adjust signal timings based on demand. This could allow authorities to respond more quickly when congestion builds up on particular roads while also strengthening monitoring of traffic violations.

Unlike the previous operator-dependent system, the new setup will use real-time traffic data to operate signals through a demand-responsive approach. Traffic police will also be able to adjust signal timings remotely using tablets and other digital devices when necessary.

DMP Additional Police Commissioner Md Anisur Rahman said changing road users' behaviour and bringing greater discipline to traffic management would take time, but public response to the initiative had been encouraging.

However, authorities acknowledge that technology alone cannot solve Dhaka's traffic problems. Unregulated pedestrian crossings, the widespread movement of battery-powered rickshaws and unfit vehicles continue to disrupt traffic flow and limit the effectiveness of signal management.

To support the expanded system, authorities are working to increase manpower and establish a specialised traffic technical unit. Relevant personnel are also being trained to operate and maintain the new technology.

Officials believe that combining AI-based traffic management with skilled personnel and stricter enforcement of traffic laws could bring visible improvements to Dhaka's road network and gradually restore greater discipline to traffic movement.
