The Election Commission has upheld the candidacy of AK Azad after rejecting Shamim Haque's appeal against him.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and other Election Commissioners gave this verdict after hearing the appeal at the Election Commission Building in Agargaon on Friday morning (December 15).

On December 9, Shamim Haque appealed to the EC, alleging that Azad's affidavit concealed details of dual citizenship, gave 'false information' about assets and dependents.

The EC on Friday morning cancelled the candidature of Awami League's Faridpur-3 aspirant Shamim Haque alias Holland Shamim.

The commission cancelled Shamim's candidature after hearing an appeal filed by AK Azad, challenging his candidacy.

AK Azad filed an appeal before the EC challenging Shamim's candidature for having dual citizenship. As per constitution, no one having dual citizenship can contest the elections.
