AL leader dies at Kashimpur Central Jail gate in Gazipur
An Awami League leader died after suffering cardiac arrest while being taken from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur for police remand on Sunday (December 21).
The deceased was identified as Wasikur Rahman Babu, 43, son of Enayetur Rahman of Uttar Bashbaria village in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj. He was a former president of Badda Thana Chhatra League and served as youth and sports secretary of Badda Thana Awami League.
He fell ill during the handover process at the prison office and was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail-2 Al Mamun confirmed the death, saying it was caused by a heart attack.
Prison sources said Wasikur Rahman Babu was arrested on September 24 during a sudden procession in the Panthapath area of the capital in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. He was transferred to Kashimpur Central Jail-2 on September 27, and a court later granted a three-day police remand in the case.
Following the court order, a police team arrived at the jail on Sunday afternoon to take him into custody for interrogation. As part of the handover procedure, he was seated on a chair in the admission section of the prison office, where he suddenly collapsed. He was immediately taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur, where he was declared dead at the emergency department.
Prison authorities said the legal process following the death is underway.
