AL leader dies during custody in Meherpur
Golam Mostofa, 55, a jailed Awami League leader, has died while receiving treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital, authorities said.
Mostofa was a former president of the Mahajanpur Union unit of the banned Awami League and a member of the district Awami League.
He was arrested on December 15, 2025, during a police operation in Meherpur Sadar in connection with a murder case filed over a 2013 incident in which Jamaat leader Tarik Mohammad Saifullah was killed, as well as an anti-terrorism case.
Jail officials said Mostofa fell ill suddenly on Saturday and was first taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he later died.
Mohammad Amanullah, superintendent of Meherpur District Jail, confirmed that Mostofa received immediate medical attention, but could not be saved.
The body will be handed over to the family after completing legal formalities, the authorities said.
