AL leader's mother jailed after filing case over attack on her home in Kushtia

A elderly woman has been sent to jail in a case over the alleged vandalism of a Krishak Dal office in Kushtia, days after she filed a separate complaint over an attack on her family home and property.

Nurjahan Begum, 68, mother of Ruhul Amin, a local Youth League leader, was taken to Islami University police station on Sunday (September 27) after police asked her to discuss the case she had filed. Later that day, her family learned that she had been arrested as a suspect in the Anti-Terrorism Act case over the Krishak Dal office attack.

Nurjahan was not named in the first information report. Police said, however, that their investigation found her involvement in the September 15 attack and that she was arrested as a suspect. A Kushtia court subsequently ordered her to be sent to jail.

Her family alleges that a group of people attacked and vandalised their home and set fire to a jute warehouse amid a land dispute. After police allegedly declined to register a case, Nurjahan filed a complaint in court on September 21. The family says the attack was linked to a local political dispute, but those allegations could not be independently verified.

The separate case over the Krishak Dal office was filed on September 16, naming 75 people and 100–120 unidentified others. It alleges that the office in Nolkula village was vandalised and people inside were assaulted the previous night. Habibur Rahman, identified by local sources as a Krishak Dal figure, is the complainant.

Nurjahan’s daughter Nasima Khatun alleged that the complainant’s family had a land dispute with them. The complainant’s political position and his response to the allegation could not be independently confirmed. His phone was reportedly switched off.

Islami University police OC SM Mamunur Rashid said Nurjahan was arrested because investigators found her involvement in the Krishak Dal office attack. Her son Ruhul Amin, who is accused in the case, is currently in hiding, according to the family.

The case and the conflicting accounts have drawn attention because Nurjahan was not among those named in the original complaint and was arrested after filing her own case.
