BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas has claimed that the Awami League was the “suitable party” for anti-liberation razakars and al-badrs in 1971. He alleged that ahead of the upcoming election, several political parties are using religion to intimidate voters.

He made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking at the inauguration of a medical camp at Siddheshwari Balur Maath in Dhaka.

Mirza Abbas said the razakars and al-badrs collaborated with the Pakistani forces during the Liberation War, and now they are again seeking votes. He questioned whether this was the kind of Bangladesh they wanted.

Criticising the Awami League, he said the party behaves in an “uncivil manner”. “We cannot behave like them, and that is why their voices are so loud,” he said. He further alleged that certain parties are misinterpreting religion to mislead the public. The BNP leader urged the people of the country to remain alert.
