Ali Riaz, vice-chairman of the National Consensus Commission, expressed hope that a consensus charter could be finalized by mid-July. The commission held its eighth day of the second round of dialogue with political parties on Wednesday at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital’s Bailey Road.

Riaz described the talks as a mix of progress and setbacks. “Sometimes there is progress, and sometimes there is disappointment when things don’t move forward as expected,” he said.

Key issues under discussion include the demarcation of electoral constituencies, the caretaker government system, and presidential pardoning powers.

“As of today, I believe we may be able to move towards a charter by mid-July,” Riaz added, emphasizing that “cooperation and sincerity” from all parties are crucial to success.

He also noted increased communication between political parties and the commission, both formally and informally, which has raised hopes for finding common ground.

“We may not achieve progress every day, but we are making headway, exploring different frameworks, and building mutual understanding,” Riaz said.

The meeting was chaired by Ali Riaz, with commission members Sofor Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Dr. Ayub Mia in attendance.
