Allegations of being thrown off train after mugging, youth dies at DMCH
A young man named Hafizur Rahman (25) has died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being critically injured in a fall from a moving train in the capital's Kurmitola. There are allegations that he was thrown off the moving train during a scuffle with muggers. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether he was pushed off or fell from the train himself.
Hafizur died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday morning. Earlier, on Wednesday evening, locals saw him lying in a bloody condition beside the railway line behind Kurmitola Hospital. Later, passers-by rescued him and first took him to Kurmitola Hospital. From there, he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 9:30pm.
The deceased Hafizur Rahman is the son of the late Abdur Rahman Sheikh of Charchinguri village in Bagerhat's Chitalmari upazila. He worked at a resort named Shailda in Joydebpur, Gazipur. His wife and children live in the village.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said two passers-by brought Hafizur to the hospital in an injured condition around 9:30pm on Wednesday. He died while undergoing treatment on Thursday morning. His identity could not be known when he was brought to the hospital. It was identified later in the afternoon.
Foyez, a passer-by who brought Hafizur to the hospital, said he went to the spot after seeing a crowd beside the railway line behind Kurmitola Hospital on Wednesday evening. There he saw Hafizur lying in a bloody condition. He learned from local residents that muggers had attacked Hafizur on a moving train heading to Kamalapur. Locals said he was pushed off the train during a scuffle.
Later, Foyez and others took Hafizur to Kurmitola Hospital. From there, he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 9:30pm.
Hafizur's elder brother, Md Hossain Sheikh, said Hafizur had set out from Gazipur on Wednesday to go to his village home in Bagerhat on leave. He usually came from Joydebpur by train to Kamalapur in Dhaka. He would then go to his village home by bus from Sayedabad.
Hossain Sheikh said they received news of Hafizur's death through police on Thursday morning. Later, they came to Dhaka from the village and identified his body at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhaka Railway Police Station (Kamalapur) Joynal Abedin said a young man died while undergoing treatment after falling from a train in the Kurmitola area. His identity has been identified. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether he was thrown off or fell from the train. The incident is being investigated.
No case has been filed over the incident so far. Hafizur's body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
