Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, member of the BNP Standing Committee, has questioned whether Jamaat-e-Islami aims to transform Bangladesh into a failed state.

Speaking to reporters at the Sarina Hotel in Banani on Wednesday, Khasru linked the call for a proportional representation (PR) system to reluctance over participating in elections. “The demand for PR and related movements have sparked concerns among the public about Jamaat’s intentions to destabilize the country,” he said.

Khasru emphasized that “in a democratic system, political parties must seek the people’s mandate through elections to gain ground legitimately.”

He criticized the parties organizing protests, stating that they “show no respect for the ongoing discussions in the consensus commission.” He added that the public will ultimately decide the political fate of those attempting to undermine national stability.

Addressing the BNP’s position, Khasru dismissed claims that the PR movement is pressuring the party. “With voters awaiting elections, political engagement must come through election campaigns. Our party leaders and activists are already on the ground, preparing for the polls,” he said.
