Ammar among 9 Shibir men sued in attempted murder case, PBI to investigate

A Rajshahi court has ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate an attempted murder case filed against nine leaders of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RAKSU), including RAKSU General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar and Assistant General Secretary S.M. Salman Sabbir, over the alleged assault of a student at the university's central library.

The case was filed on Thursday with the Matihar Cognizance Court by M.S. Azad Uz Zaman, the father of injured student Mahmudul Hasan. The complaint also names 17 to 18 unidentified individuals as accused.
According to the case statement, a group of 19 to 20 people armed with locally made weapons, iron rods, bamboo sticks, and canes attacked Mahmudul Hasan inside the university's central library on July 27, leaving him with serious injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

The complaint further alleges that the attackers attempted to strangle the student and later assaulted him again after pulling him out of an ambulance during rescue efforts.
Other named accused include RAKSU Information and Research Secretary B.M. Nazmus Sakib, Deputy Secretary Sifat Abu Saleh, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall GS Ariful Islam, Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall VP Ahsan Ullah Farhan, Nawab Abdul Latif Hall GS Nurul Islam Shahid, Rajshahi University Chhatra Shibir Media and Publicity Secretary Mehedi Sajib, and Campus Monitoring Coordinator and University Senate student representative Fahim Reza.

The plaintiff alleged that police at Matihar Police Station refused to register the case when the family approached them the day after the incident. The court later accepted the complaint and assigned the investigation to the PBI.

Following the incident, the accused denied the allegations. RAKSU General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar claimed that neither he nor his associates had attacked anyone, asserting instead that they had protested against an alleged attack on the RAKSU office.

No immediate response was available from the other accused regarding the case.
