Anti-cultural forces carried out attack on advantage of situation: Chhayanaut
Chhayanaut, a Dhaka-based cultural organisation, has condemned the attack on its office in the capital's Dhanmondi, calling it an assault by a group opposed to cultural activities.
In a statement signed by it's President Sarwar Ali and General Secretary Laisa Ahmed Lisa on Friday (December 19), the organisation said attackers took advantage of the situation following Osman Hadi’s death to vandalise the Chhayanaut Shongshkriti-Bhobon.
According to Chhayanaut, a mob forcibly entered the six-story building, damaged most rooms, CCTV cameras, exhibition spaces, musical instruments, computers, and furniture, and attempted arson. At least seven laptops, several phones, and hard drives were stolen.
The organisation urged the government to conduct a proper investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable.
The statement emphasised that Chhayanaut is an independent, volunteer-run cultural institution that does not receive government, foreign, or corporate funding. The organisation pledged to repair the damage using its own resources and continue its music education programs for children without interruption.
Chhayanaut highlighted its longstanding role in preserving Bengali cultural identity and promoting harmony through music. While mourning Osman Hadi’s death, the group expressed that the attack on its premises was unjustifiable and could send a negative message internationally about Bangladesh’s cultural environment.
