BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has emphasized on maintaining anti-fascist national unity, regardless of political and strategic differences.

He said that the July mass uprising created an opportunity to create national unity and BNP has accepted it. This unity will be the main force of opposition politics.

He said this at a roundtable discussion titled ‘Future of Democratic Bangladesh: People’s Thoughts and Expectations’ organized by the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) at the Lakeshore Hotel in Gulshan on Saturday (September 13).

Salahuddin Ahmed said that a turning point has been reached in the country after the mass uprising of 2024. "We have to utilize this moment. The state must prevent the rebirth of fascism in the future through genuine democratic transformation. This requires the establishment of an elected political government and an effective parliament. Only through reforms can we build accountable good governance and a society free from discrimination. We have already reached a consensus on this."

Regarding the meeting of the Consensus Commission, he said: "There were arguments and disagreements in the meeting, but the atmosphere never lost its cordiality. Various statements are being made on the streets or in rallies about elections and reforms, which are part of democratic rights. This will be properly reflected only through a fair election."

He also said that at the beginning of the discussion, there was no question whether consensus on the reform proposals would be declared as a national commitment. However, later the matter reached the level of a commitment. But, the demand for implementing constitutional reforms has not been raised yet. These reforms must be implemented through a legitimate and democratic process.
