Appeal to HC against suspension of Dr Yunus' sentence
The Department of Factories and Institutions, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Talukdar, has appealed to the High Court against the 6-month suspension of Dr Muhammad Yunus' sentence granted by the Labor Appellate Tribunal in the case of violation of labor laws. Besides, the petition also sought a bar on Dr Yunus from going abroad without the court's permission.
DIFE lawyer Md Khurshid Alam Khan confirmed the matter on Sunday (4 February).
The Labour Appellate Tribunal on January 28 granted bail to Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others in the labour law violation case.
Earlier, Dr Yunus had applied for bail at the Labor Appellate Tribunal. Additionally, he had lodged an appeal seeking acquittal from the 6-month sentence in the labor law violation case. On that particular day, at 10:45 am, Dr. Yunus appeared before the Labor Appeal Tribunal and filed the appeal.
Dr. Yunus was convicted and sentenced to 6 months on January 1 for violating labor law. Among the four accused, Dr. Muhammad Yunus was one of them. The verdict, consisting of 84 pages, was issued after Judge Sheikh Marina Sultana signed it.
According to the comprehensive judgment, the accused individuals have committed offenses punishable under Sections 303(5) and 307 of the Act by violating the provisions of Sections 4(7) (8), 117, 234 of the Labor Act 2006. The state party has successfully proven the crimes against the accused beyond any doubt. Consequently, the accused individuals, including Grameen Telecom's Chairman Professor Dr. Mohammad Yunus, Managing Director Ashraful Hasan, Director Nurjahan Begum, and Md., have been sentenced to 06 (six) months of unpaid work for the offense under Section 303(3) of the aforementioned Act. They have also been fined Taka 5,000/-(five thousand) with a default punishment of 10 (ten) days imprisonment without labor. Furthermore, for the offense under Section 307, a fine of Taka 25,000/-(twenty-five thousand) has been imposed along with an additional 15 (fifteen) days of imprisonment in case of non-payment.
