The Election Commission has allowed candidates to appeal against decisions made by returning officers during the scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming by-elections in Sherpur-3 and Bogura-6 constituencies. Aggrieved candidates can submit their appeal applications to the Election Commission between March 6 and March 10.

Officials of the Election Commission's election management branch confirmed the information to the media on Wednesday, March 4.

The EC said the scrutiny of nomination papers by returning officers has already been completed for both seats. Candidates can file appeals during office hours within this five-day period if they wish.

In Sherpur-3, candidates who submitted nomination papers are Abul Taleb Mohammad Saifuddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Mohammad Masudur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Mohammad Mahmudul Haque Rubel of BNP, Mohammad Mizanur Rahman of Basad (Marxist), and independent candidate Mohammad Aminul Islam.

It is to be noted that voting in this constituency was suspended during the 13th National Parliamentary Election on February 12 following the death of a valid candidate.

In Bogura-6, candidates who submitted nomination papers are Mohammad Abidur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Mohammad Rezaul Karim Badsha of BNP, and Mohammad Al Alim Talukdar of Bangladesh Development Party. BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman had won this seat in the February 12 election. However, as he also won the Dhaka-17 constituency, he vacated the Bogura-6 seat in accordance with the law, resulting in the seat falling vacant.

According to the announced schedule, the subsequent stages of the election are: appeal disposal on March 11, last date for withdrawal of candidature on March 14, symbol allocation on March 15, and polling on April 9.
