Arakan Army abducts 4 Bangladeshi fishermen from Naf River
The Arakan Army of Myanmar has taken four fishermen who were fishing at the mouth of the Naf River in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, hostage at gunpoint.
The Arakan Army abducted them from the Golarchar mouth area of Shah Porir Dwip in Teknaf at 11 am on Tuesday.
The abducted fishermen are fishermen Md. Hasan (30), Abdur Rakim (20), Md. Jaber (26), Md. Hasan (16), residents of the south para of Shahparir Island, Teknaf.
Bashir Ahmed, president of the south boat dock of Teknaf Shah Porir Dwip, confirmed the matter.
He said that when they went fishing in the Naf River in the morning like every day, the Arakan Army of Myanmar abducted them along with their boats. There is panic among the fishermen and villagers in this incident. The BGB and the local administration have been informed about today's incident.
A top Teknaf BGB official, who did not want to be named, said, "We have received information that four fishermen were taken away along with their boats from the Naf River, which crossed the Bangladesh border. We are investigating the reason for this incident. In addition, efforts are being made to bring them back quickly."
When asked, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Ehsan Uddin said, "We have heard about the fishermen being taken away. Our law enforcement agencies are working to bring them back."
Earlier, on the morning of October 6 last year, 58 fishermen along with 6 fishing trawlers went to deep sea fishing from Shahparir Dwip Jetty in Teknaf. They were abducted by that country's navy on October 9. At that time, a speed boat patrolling the Myanmar navy fired at a Bangladeshi trawler. Three fishermen were shot. One died on the spot after being shot. The fishermen were later returned. Bangladesh strongly protested against this.
In addition, on October 15, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) brought back 16 Bangladeshi fishermen who were in the custody of the Arakan Army, a separatist armed group in Myanmar, who had infiltrated into Rakhine, Myanmar.
