Armed robbery in Tejgaon: 5 Lakh Saudi riyal looted, 6 held
In a brazen robbery in the capital's Tejgaon area, armed assailants looted 500,000 Saudi Riyals—equivalent to nearly BDT 1 crore—from a private vehicle transporting foreign currency for a money exchange company. The incident took place on Tuesday evening in front of the Essential Drugs office, opposite Tejgaon Polytechnic Institute.
According to police sources, the money was being transported from an office in Paltan to Uttara via a private car. On the way, a group of armed individuals intercepted the vehicle and carried out the robbery at gunpoint. An employee of the money exchange firm, identified as Tuhin, was present in the car at the time.
Following the incident, the owner of the company, Thandu Mia, promptly alerted the police. In a joint operation, detectives from the Tejgaon Division and officers from Tejgaon Industrial Police Station arrested six suspects, including Tuhin. Law enforcement recovered 269,000 Saudi Riyals from their possession.
Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division, Ibne Mizan, confirmed the arrests and stated that discrepancies in Tuhin’s initial statements raised suspicion. Upon further interrogation, it was revealed that he had played an active role in planning the robbery.
"Based on Tuhin’s confession, we conducted raids at multiple locations and apprehended the other suspects involved," said the Deputy Commissioner.
A case is currently being prepared at the Tejgaon Industrial Police Station. Police say efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining stolen money and apprehend any fugitives still at large. The arrested individuals are being held at the Detective Branch (DB) office for further questioning.
