Lieutenant General Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd), Adviser to the interim government on home affairs, has said that 50 percent of the Bangladesh Army personnel deployed to maintain law and order will not be withdrawn from the field.

He gave this information while responding to journalists’ questions after a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the Ministry of Home Affairs conference room in the Secretariat on Sunday, November 9.

Earlier on Tuesday, several media outlets reported that a decision had been made to withdraw 50 percent of the army members deployed in the field following a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Secretariat. The reports cited two senior government officials present at the meeting. However, the adviser has today dismissed such reports as baseless rumours.

The home affairs adviser said, “There is no plan to withdraw 50 percent of the army personnel deployed to control the law and order situation. The rumours spreading about this are false. No such decision has been made.”

When asked whether the government was concerned about the Awami League’s programmes, he said, “The government is not worried about their lockdown or shutdown programmes.”
