Arrest warrant issued against Chayanika Chowdhury

An arrest warrant has been issued against director Chayanika Chowdhury in a cheque dishonor case. The order was issued by Dhaka’s Seventh Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Bulbul Islam on Tuesday (May 6).

The information was confirmed by the plaintiff's lawyer, Abdus Salam Himel, to the media.

According to court sources, the scheduled date was set for the examination of the plaintiff, producer Rashedul Islam Riaz. However, Chayanika Chowdhury did not appear in court on the specified date. Although her lawyer requested an extension, the court rejected the request. As a result, her bail was revoked, and an arrest warrant was issued. The court also scheduled a new date for presenting arguments on the case for June 26.

The case details reveal that on August 24, 2012, producer Rashedul Islam Riaz entered into an agreement with Chayanika Chowdhury to produce the drama Jibon Sundar Hok. Under the contract, Riaz paid Chayanika Tk230,000. Later, Chayanika issued a cheque for the same amount on October 30, 2012.

However, since the drama was not produced and multiple attempts to cash the cheque failed, Riaz filed a case in the Dhaka court on May 14, 2013. After the case was filed, Chayanika Chowdhury surrendered to the court on June 2, 2014, and was granted bail. The case was transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Court on August 7, 2014, and formal charges were framed against her on February 10, 2015.

The producer claims that Chayanika deceived him by not producing the drama and not returning the money.

After a prolonged legal process, the arrest warrant has now been issued.
