Arrest warrants issued against Bashundhara Chairman, MD, 2 others
A court has issued arrest warrants against Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Managing Director (MD) Sayem Sobhan Anvir and two others in a cheque dishonour case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman issued the warrant on Sunday (August 17).
The other two people are--Naeem Nizam and Shahed Muhammad Ali.
Plaintiff's lawyer Amjad Hossain Majumder confirmed the matter on Monday (September 18).
He told the media that the case was filed on May 26. The court issued summons to the accused to appear. The accused did not appear in court. "On Sunday, we applied for an arrest warrant against the accused. The court approved the application and issued an arrest warrant against the accused."
The case was filed on May 26 by Rahenur Islam, a reporter for the online news portal Sakal-Sandhya.com.
According to the case statement, Rahenur Islam started working as a senior associate editor at the daily Kaler Kanth newspaper on July 1, 2009. He resigned on October 16, 2023. He was owed money by the company for long-term service benefits. He was given 10 cheques to pay that money. Out of which, two were cashed while two cheques of Tk1.96 lakh were not honoured as Rahenur Islam deposited those at the Mugda branch of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC. The cheques were dishonored on March 23 due to insufficient funds. On April 8, he sent a legal notice to the defendants. They were informed that the cheques should be honored. But they have not taken any action. So far, they have not taken any action to pay the partial amount owed.
