Ashuganj BNP declares Rumeen Farhana unwelcome over parliament remarks

The Ashuganj upazila unit of the BNP has declared independent lawmaker Barrister Rumeen Farhana unwelcome in the area, protesting remarks she made in parliament criticising the party.

BNP leaders and activists staged a procession carrying brooms through the main streets of Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria on Saturday afternoon (September 12).

The programme began with a brief rally at the local BNP office, followed by the procession involving party members from different unions and affiliated organisations.

Speaking at the rally, Ashuganj BNP President Md Shahjahan Siraj sharply criticised Farhana’s remarks and accused her of using “unparliamentary language” against the BNP. He also alleged that she was serving the interests of India and the Awami League. The allegations could not be independently verified.

Farhana, an independent MP from Brahmanbaria-2, criticised the BNP in parliament on September 9, saying a BNP government would not necessarily eliminate crises in gas, electricity and fertiliser.

She also said Bangladesh could continue to face serious problems with corruption and loan defaults if the party returned to power.

Her constituency includes Sarail, Ashuganj and part of Bijoynagar. Ashuganj BNP leaders said Saturday’s rally and broom procession were organised in protest against those remarks.
