An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Chunarughat Police Station in Habiganj has been withdrawn and attached to the district police lines after a video surfaced on social media in which he appeared to justify taking bribes openly.

ASI Mohammad Elias Hossain was withdrawn from the police station and attached to the Habiganj police lines on Monday night (October 5) after several media outlets reported on the video.

According to police and local sources, Elias had gone to Ranigaon Bazar about a week ago to investigate a case filed by a local trader, Noman Mia. During the visit, a local resident recorded his remarks about taking bribes on a mobile phone.

In the video, the ASI is heard saying that he had spent bribe money to obtain his police uniform and that he wore it to take bribes.

The video later circulated widely on social media, triggering criticism.

Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chunarughat Police Station, said, "Elias was withdrawn on Monday night and that senior police officials had been informed of the matter."

"An investigation would be conducted and appropriate action would be taken based on its findings," he said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mafiur Rahman, who is in charge of the Madhabpur Circle, confirmed that an investigation was under way and said further details would be provided after it was completed.
