ASK calls for judicial probe into Khagrachhari violence
The Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed deep concern over recent violence in Khagrachhari district, which left three people dead, many injured, and numerous homes and businesses damaged by arson.
In a press release on Monday, ASK demanded the formation of a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the incident. The organization also called for protection of the teenage rape survivor and her family, along with compensation for the families of the deceased and injured and rehabilitation for those affected.
The violence erupted after a schoolgirl from the Marma community was raped, sparking widespread outrage. Local youth staged protests, blockades, and strikes demanding justice, which escalated into deadly clashes despite attempts to control the situation.
ASK warned that if excessive force was used by authorities, the government must conduct an immediate investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable. The organization noted that past failures to properly investigate incidents in the hill regions have often led to recurring violence.
Emphasizing Bangladesh’s multi-ethnic and multicultural identity, ASK said that peace in the hill districts is vital not only for local communities but also for national unity and the country’s image. The organization stressed that violence, fear, and incitement are not solutions, as they only fuel mistrust and instability.
ASK further stated that the state has a duty to protect the lives, property, and dignity of its citizens, and failure to do so affects the entire society.
