ASK condemns attack on Hindu homes in Rangpur

The human rights organization Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has voiced strong concern and condemnation over the recent attack, looting, and vandalism of Hindu homes in the Betgari Union of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur. In a statement released to the media on Tuesday, ASK denounced the incident and demanded the prompt identification and prosecution of the perpetrators.

In its statement, ASK condemned the violence against an entire community triggered by social media posts accusing a young boy of religious disrespect, calling it unacceptable in any civilized society. The boy, a student at a local private school, was arrested by the police, charged under the Cyber Security Act, and sent to jail through the court. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, provocative messages were disseminated through loudspeakers in the area. This incited a group of unruly individuals, who then organized and attacked the homes of the minority community.

The violence led to widespread destruction and looting of numerous homes, instilling intense fear and panic among the minority community in the area. Authorities have announced the deployment of both the army and police to restore control and manage the situation.

ASK's statement emphasized the growing concern over the recurring use of religious sentiments as a tool to target minority communities. In many instances, the perpetrators escape justice, perpetuating a culture of impunity. This not only infringes upon constitutionally guaranteed rights but also undermines the state's core values and its law and order system.

In light of this, ASK has urged swift legal action against those responsible, along with steps to guarantee the safety of the affected families, provide compensation and rehabilitation, and take strong, effective measures to prevent further communal violence.
