ASK condemns rape of minority woman in Muradnagar, demands swift justice
Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a leading human rights organization, has strongly condemned the rape and assault of a Hindu minority woman in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla. In a press statement issued on Sunday, ASK described the incident as a horrific crime and a deliberate act of aggression and hatred against women.
According to media reports, on the night of June 26, a politically influential man named Fozor Ali allegedly broke into the victim’s home in Bahechar Pachkitta village and raped her. Following the assault, a video of the violent incident was reportedly circulated on social media. At the time, the victim was at home with her family. Neighbors, upon hearing her screams, intervened and rescued her.
ASK stated that such "barbaric and medieval brutality" is utterly unacceptable in a civilized society and represents a grave violation of the Constitution, the rule of law, and fundamental human rights.
The organization further noted that this crime reflects more than just individual misconduct. It points to systemic failures, including long-standing impunity, government inaction, and the failure to enforce laws against influential perpetrators.
“When a woman cannot feel safe within her own home, it reflects a serious failure of the state to ensure basic security,” the statement read. ASK also linked the incident to a disturbing pattern of justice being delayed or denied in previous cases of violence against women.
ASK demanded a prompt, transparent, and impartial investigation, along with exemplary punishment for the perpetrator. It also called for immediate measures to ensure the safety of the victim and her family, and the provision of legal, psychological, and medical support.
“If such heinous crimes are not addressed with the seriousness they warrant, the dignity and rights of women will continue to be undermined, and the rule of law will further erode,” ASK warned.
The organization urged the state to move beyond routine responses and take decisive action to bring the perpetrator to justice. It also called for concrete steps to protect the rights and security of all citizens, particularly those belonging to vulnerable communities.
