Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the violent and degrading treatment of former Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda. The incident occurred on June 22, 2025, in Uttara, Dhaka, where a group of unruly individuals illegally gathered, assaulted him, and forced a garland of shoes around his neck before handing him over to the police.

Widely circulated video footage on social media shows scenes of the attack that go beyond personal insult. ASK believes such acts are an affront to the Constitution, fundamental human rights, and the rule of law in Bangladesh.

ASK emphasizes that any allegations against a citizen must be addressed through legal and constitutional processes. Resorting to vigilante justice or public humiliation violates not only individual rights but also weakens the very foundation of a democratic and civil society. If such deliberate and organized acts of violence continue unchecked, they risk normalizing impunity and institutionalizing a dangerous “mob justice” culture.

Although the Chief Adviser’s Office has issued a statement assuring legal action against the perpetrators, ASK notes that in previous similar incidents, the public has rarely seen those responsible brought to justice. This lack of accountability raises serious questions about the state’s role in protecting citizens and upholding the law.

Articles 31 and 32 of the Bangladesh Constitution guarantee every citizen the right to personal security, dignity, and justice. No individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands—only the courts can determine legal accountability.

Disturbingly, from January to June 2025, at least 83 people have reportedly been killed in mob violence, underscoring a worrying trend of lawlessness. Despite occasional warnings from security forces, the government has yet to take strong and effective action against these violent groups. The apparent silence and inaction from the authorities may be emboldening such elements.

KM Nurul Huda is not only a citizen but also a freedom fighter who served in a constitutional position. Assaulting him in this manner is a direct insult to both national dignity and the rule of law.

ASK calls on the government to take immediate and concrete steps to ensure justice, prevent further incidents of mob violence, and uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution. The rise of violent extremism must be confronted urgently to protect citizens and preserve public trust in legal institutions.
