The court has sent Farhan Shahriar alias Ivan, arrested in a case filed over threats, intimidation, serious assault and demand for toll on Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, to five-day remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manzurul Islam’s court passed the order after hearing on Saturday (August 22). Deputy Director of the prosecution department Roknuzzaman confirmed the matter.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Paltan Model Police Station Md Atikuzzaman, produced Farhan in court and sought 10-day remand for interrogation.

The investigation officer of the case said Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman, head of the nose, ear, throat and head-neck surgery department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, has been regularly seeing patients at Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar area under Paltan Model Police Station for the past two months.

When the doctor was boarding a CNG on the paved road in front of Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar area, Farhan Shahriar alias Ivan and several others blocked the path of his CNG around 10:45pm on August 17. They later forcibly made the doctor get down from the CNG.

At that time one Jiban alias Adil punched the doctor in the eye. The others accompanying him also assaulted the doctor. When nearby people came forward, the attackers fled.

The investigation officer of the case further said that a few days earlier an unknown mobile number called the doctor’s phone and demanded a toll of 15,000 dollars. Tracing that number, Farhan Shahriar alias Ivan was arrested from his house on August 21 with the assistance of Ramganj Police Station of Lakshmipur.

Police claimed that during preliminary interrogation Ivan confessed to his involvement in the incident. A 10-day remand was sought to learn details of the incident and information about the absconding accused. After hearing, the court granted five-day remand.
