A BBC investigation has uncovered that at least 52 civilians were killed in indiscriminate police firing in Jatrabari, Dhaka, during anti-government protests on August 5, 2024.

The incident is now being considered one of the deadliest episodes of police violence in Bangladesh's history.

The BBC analysed hundreds of videos, photos, and eyewitness accounts, and visited the site multiple times. A key piece of evidence includes mobile phone footage recorded by protester Miraj Hossain, who was among those killed. The video, which captures the moment police opened fire, was later recovered by his family and shared with the BBC. Metadata analysis confirmed that the shooting began at 2:43pm and lasted for over 30 minutes.

Footage shows police officers initially withdrawing from the gate of Jatrabari Police Station before opening fire on protesters. CCTV and drone videos show injured protesters being kicked by police, bodies lying on the road, and survivors being rushed to hospitals in vans, rickshaws, and motorbikes.

Initial reports had put the death toll at around 30, but the BBC's verification of hospital records, social media, and interviews with victims' families confirmed at least 52 civilian deaths. Six police officers were also reportedly killed after protesters retaliated and set fire to the Jatrabari Police Station.

A spokesperson for the Bangladesh Police acknowledged the incident, calling it a "tragic episode" involving "excessive force" by some officers. Several cases have been filed against police personnel, including the then officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station.

In a statement to the BBC, the police said they have launched a "thorough and impartial" investigation and are committed to ensuring accountability.

The Bangladesh Army was also contacted for comment on its role during the incident, but no response has been received.
