At least 80 people were injured across the capital while slaughtering sacrificial animals and cutting meat on Eid-ul-Azha day, with many sustaining injuries from sharp weapons, animal attacks and handling accidents.

The injured received treatment at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital between 10:30am and 3:00pm on Thursday (May 28), hospital sources said.

Among them, around 20 critically injured patients were referred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation, commonly known as Pongu Hospital, for advanced treatment.

The victims came from different parts of the capital, including Narinda, Wari, Lalbagh, Kotwali, Sutrapur, Chawkbazar, Hazaribagh, Bangshal, Sabujbagh, Uttara, Badda, Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Mirpur and Pallabi.

Emergency department physician Dr. Collins Mallik said none of the injured had been admitted to the hospital so far, as many returned home after receiving primary treatment.

He said several people were injured after being kicked or gored by cattle, while others accidentally cut themselves with sharp knives and cleavers during meat processing.

“Despite the Eid holidays, doctors and healthcare workers are continuing emergency medical services without interruption,” Dr. Collins said.
