Attack attempt on India Assistant High Commissioner's residence in Chattogram, 12 held
A group of protesters attempted to attack the residence of Indian Assistant High Commissioner in Chattogram, Dr. Rajeev Ranjan, over the death of inqilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. A chase and counter-chase between the protesters and the police took place to bring the situation under control. At least one protester, including several policemen, was injured in the incident. Police have detained 12 people from the scene.
The incident took place in the relevant area of the city at 1:30 am on Thursday (December 18).
Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Haseeb Aziz visited the scene immediately after the incident. He met the Indian Assistant High Commissioner.
The CMP Commissioner said that the Indian Assistant High Commissioner was staying at his residence at the time of the incident. The situation became heated when the protesters hurled bricks and stones at the residence. Later, the police brought the situation under control by firing several rounds of tear gas and sound grenades. Twelve people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident.
He also said that preparations are being made to file a case against the detainees under the Speedy Trial Act. At the same time, the Indian Assistant High Commissioner in Chittagong expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements at the residence.
According to police sources, after the news of Sharif Osman bin Hadi's death spread, a group of people started gathering in front of the Indian Assistant High Commissioner's residence from around 10 pm on Thursday. As the night fell, they became agitated and tried to commit violence.
The protesters demanded that those involved in Hadi's murder be brought to justice. They also demanded that those involved in the July massacre, especially Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the party's top leaders, be brought back to the country.
Additional police have been deployed in the area after the incident. Police said that the situation is currently under control.
