Attacks on Prothom Alo Daily Star direct blow to media freedom: EU ambassador
European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller has described the attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star as a direct blow to media freedom and the right to freedom of expression. He said such incidents have created a grave moment for Bangladesh’s democracy and stressed that the EU does not want to see a recurrence of such violence.
The EU ambassador made the remarks on Sunday, December 21, while visiting the Prothom Alo office in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, to express solidarity. He strongly condemned and protested the terrorist attack, arson and looting at the newspaper’s office on Thursday night.
Standing in front of the building damaged by the attack and fire, Michael Miller observed the situation and later spoke with senior journalists of the newspaper. He sought a detailed account of how the situation deteriorated on the day of the incident and also raised questions about the role of law enforcement agencies in controlling the situation.
Highlighting the importance of freedom of expression ahead of the upcoming national election, the EU ambassador said maintaining space for free expression is crucial as Bangladesh moves towards the polls. He added that he does not want to see such incidents happen again.
He further said that to ensure a peaceful and credible thirteenth national parliamentary election, it is essential to keep media publication activities functioning, ensure uninterrupted news reporting and guarantee accountability for all.
During the visit, Prothom Alo Managing Editor Anisul Hoque, Deputy Editor Lajjat Enam Mohsi and Head of Online Showkat Hossain spoke with the EU ambassador and briefed him on the overall situation.
