Allegations have been raised that petrol was poured on a businessman's body and his business establishment, with an attempt to set them on fire, and that he was beaten after he refused to pay extortion in Lakshmipur. Three businessmen were injured in the incident. CCTV footage of the incident has spread on social media.

Police said none of the three accused had been arrested as of Friday afternoon. Inspector (Investigation) Md Sharifur Rahman of Sadar Police Station said the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon on Kalibazar Road adjacent to North Temuhani in Lakshmipur town. The injured were treated at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital.

The accused are Delwar Hossain and his two brothers, Shakil and Munna. The businessmen alleged that Delwar had previously demanded extortion from several traders in the Kalibazar area. Among them, a daily demand of Tk 500 was made to salon owner Jagadish and mobile service businessman Krishnapal, they alleged.

When they refused to pay, Delwar, Shakil and Munna allegedly beat Krishnapal and tried to set his shop on fire after pouring petrol on it. When they tried to intervene, businessman Shahed Alam and employee Sohag from a nearby shop were also beaten. Later, when neighbouring traders came forward, they were also allegedly attacked with local weapons. Shahed Alam, Sohag and Rakib were injured in the attack.

Later, police went to the scene and brought the situation under control after a call was made to the national emergency service 999.

A case has been filed against three people in the incident. Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Sharifur Rahman said allegations were found that petrol was poured in the shop and on a person's head after extortion was refused. He described it as a life-threatening act and said operations are underway to arrest the accused.

Following the incident, panic has spread among traders in Kalibazar. Businessmen have demanded the swift arrest of the accused and the assurance of their safety.
