Attempted abduction and attack on journo foiled in Ashulia; 2 held

Just days after the killing of journalist Tuhin in Gazipur, an attempted abduction and attack on Jahidul Islam Onik, correspondent for private television channel Ekattor TV in Ashulia, was foiled late Monday night. Two suspects were held with the help of local residents, while police continue to search for others involved.

On Tuesday (August 12) morning, Ashulia Police Inspector (Operations) Safikul Islam Suman confirmed that the two accused have been sent to court. Onik was rescued and first taken to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex and later admitted to a local clinic.

The incident occurred around 10:30 pm near Baipail in Ashulia. According to Ashulia Police Inspector (Operations) Safikul Islam Suman, Onik was targeted after completing an investigative report on drug trafficking disguised as a pharmacy. The attackers tried to abduct and assault him using homemade weapons but fled when bystanders intervened.

Onik said two men on motorcycles had been waiting for him near a tea shop. When he left for home, they followed him. At the Baipail bus stand, four more men arrived in a private car and launched the attack. Before they could force him into the vehicle, locals arrived and the assailants fled.

Onik was first taken to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex for treatment and later admitted to a local clinic for further care.

Inspector Suman confirmed that two suspects have been arrested and sent to court, while operations continue to apprehend others involved.
