Dhaka's rising temperatures, driven by rapid urbanisation, shrinking water bodies and heavy fossil-fuel use, are prompting authorities to step up efforts to curb the capital’s growing urban heat.

The Public Works Department (PWD) is focusing on expanding green spaces and water bodies, promoting rooftop gardens and heat-efficient construction materials, and increasing the use of renewable energy.

Authorities are also encouraging electric, battery-powered and hybrid vehicles to reduce carbon emissions, while recommending solid and hollow blocks, non-fired bricks and heat-reducing glass for buildings. VRF and chiller-based cooling systems are being promoted as alternatives to conventional air conditioners.

The government has set a target of planting 250 million trees over the next five years to help tackle climate change. Under the programme, the PWD Metropolitan Zone aims to plant 562,000 trees by August this year.

Officials also stressed increasing and maintaining ponds, lakes and other water bodies, saying they can help lower urban temperatures and improve Dhaka’s liveability.

Meanwhile, solar panels installed under the Dhaka PWD Electrical and Mechanical Division are generating 4,622.48 kilowatts of electricity, as part of efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions.

PWD officials said short, medium and long-term measures are being pursued to transform Dhaka into a greener, more climate-resilient and liveable city.
