Auto-rickshaw driver stabbed to dead by robbers posing as passengers in Gazipur

An auto-rickshaw driver was stabbed to death by robbers posing as passengers in Gazipur's Kaliakair on Wednesday night (August 5) in a failed vehicle hijacking attempt.

The deceased, Mohammad Sumon Mia, 24, who lived with his family in a rented house in the Saheb Bazar area, was attacked around 8:30pm near Akhtar Spinning Mill in the Kalampur area.

According to police and local witnesses, three men hired Sumon's auto-rickshaw from Chandra Bus Stand on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway. Upon reaching a deserted stretch near the mill, they allegedly stabbed him repeatedly in the neck and other parts of his body before attempting to flee with the vehicle.

The attackers abandoned the auto-rickshaw and escaped into a nearby forest after local residents rushed to the scene upon hearing the driver's cries for help.

Sumon was rescued in critical condition and taken to Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Police later recovered the body, seized the auto-rickshaw, and collected evidence from the scene. The body has been sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for an autopsy.

Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kaliakair Police Station, said, "The assailants fatally stabbed the driver during the attempted robbery. An operation is underway to identify and arrest those involved."
