Autorickshaw passenger 'abducted, gang-raped' in in Sylhet, one held
A woman was reportedly abducted and gang-raped in a house in Sylhet's Biswanath upazila while she was travelling in an autorickshaw. Police have arrested the main accused in the incident. A drive is underway to arrest the other accused.
Police said that on Wednesday (July 15), the victim filed a case with Biswanath police station, naming four people and another unidentified person as the accused. The arrested person is Gayas Mia alias Geda, 44. He is a resident of Hayatergaon village in the upazila.
According to the case report and police sources, the woman boarded a CNG-powered autorickshaw from Chandipur area of South Surma towards Chhatak around 8 pm on Tuesday (July 14). According to the complaint, the driver Saidur Rahman took her to a house in Alamnagar village instead of taking her to the designated destination. It is alleged that some people who were already there raped her.
Later, around 11:30 pm, the victim informed the police with the help of local residents. After receiving the information, the police rescued her from the spot and admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bishwanath Police Station Gazi Mahbubur Rahman said that the main accused was arrested after a drive was launched immediately after receiving the complaint. He has been sent to jail through the court. The police operation to arrest the other accused in the case is continuing.
Police said that the investigation into the incident is underway and further legal action will be taken based on the information received during the investigation.
