Awami League leader attends father's janaza in handcuffs
Mohammad Shahadat Nabi, a leader of the banned Awami League and an executive committee member of the Chattogram's Chandanaish Upazila Awami League, attended his father's funeral prayers (janaza) in handcuffs after being released from prison on parole. Police noted that he was previously the relief subcommittee secretary of the Awami League's central committee.
Shahadat Nabi was released on parole for 11 and a half hours, from 4am to 3:30pm on Monday. Around 2:30pm, he participated in the Zuhr prayer and his father's janaza at a mosque in Chandanaish municipality. Following the prayers, he was taken to the family graveyard to complete his father's burial.
Family members stated that Shahadat Nabi's father, Nurunbi Saudagar, 88, passed away at a hospital in Chandanaish around 5:20am on Sunday after suffering from prolonged age-related complications.
Chandanaish Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Liton Mia stated that following his father's death, Shahadat Nabi applied for parole to the jail superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur. Based on his application, the Gazipur District Magistrate granted him parole for 11 and a half hours.
Shahadat Nabi's uncle, Nurul Alam, shared that police escorted him from Kashimpur Central Jail to Chandanaish under heavy guard around 1:30pm on Monday. Around 2pm, wearing handcuffs, he attended his father's funeral and subsequently attended the burial at the family graveyard.
Nurul Alam added that Shahadat Nabi was arrested from the Paltan area of Dhaka on August 12 of last year.
According to police, Shahadat Nabi faces three cases filed at Dhanmondi police station in Dhaka. Following the completion of the funeral and burial, he was sent back to prison under police escort around 3:20pm on Monday.
