Awami League leader Bablu Mandal dies in Sirajganj jail
An imprisoned Awami League leader, Bablu Mandal (52), has died while undergoing treatment at Sirajganj General Hospital on Thursday (July 23) morning around 10:45am.
The deceased, Bablu Mandal, was the Forest and Environment Secretary of Ratankandi Union Awami League in the Sadar upazila and a resident of Purba Bahuka village in the upazila.
According to Sirajganj District Jail sources, he was arrested in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act following the events of August 5, 2024, and was sent to jail on June 22. He had been physically ill and weak since his arrival.
On Wednesday (July 22) night, he suddenly fell ill and was admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital by jail authorities, where he died on Thursday morning.
Sirajganj District Jail Superintendent Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter and said the body has been sent to Sirajganj Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The body will be handed over to the family after legal procedures.
